We don't always have control over the events of our lives but we do have control over how we respond and that is what defines who we are as individuals.
Being open to opportunities and being flexible with regards to responses will probably lead to a good bit of "success" in life.
I don't agree that success means acceptance of life - I think a lot of successful people are that way because they do not accept what their position in life is, and work to make it better.
