It seems that life ore often delivers our sorrows before it does our joys so maybe this makes us appreciate them more but I don't think that one has to experience tragedy in order to understand or feel joy.
This is probably the kind of thing that we might say to a grieving person to help them make sense of their grief.
Against what would we measure the depth of our joyful experiences, and could we truly appreciate our moments of joy if we've not known sorrow?
