"A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog."

Welcome to the Quote of the Day! This site originated in a small, special education, high school classroom and we talk about these quotes each morning on school days. We'll share our thoughts, feelings, and personal values as we explore the words of others. We look forward to hearing your thoughts as well. If you have a quote that you would like to see used, please send it to: michelle(dot)nvs(at)gmail(dot)com (all lower case).

It is easy to share when you have plenty. Sharing what you don't have enough of is hard.
Though why are the best attributes always the ones that are difficult?
Like the woman in the Bible who did not give from wealth, but the last small bit of change she had.
I think that the meaning of charity has shifted over time. It seems to be a rather generic term for giving money, goods, or time to people who are less fortunate than the giver.
I would say that this Jack London quote uses the words like it is used in the bible and it means LOVE.
And, in that sense, it really is a genuine love that would have a person sharing the last of their food even when they are starving themselves.
Agape.
