Is this like staying in a bad relationship or a dead-end job?
Do we think that we deserve bad things or do we just not know how to break free and start over?
Sometimes the fear of the unknown is worse than the current pain.
I've found that many times in my life where I've stayed in a bad situation simply because I wasn't ready to take that leap into the unknown (such as ending my first marriage).
I've read that the brain neurologically "registers" the sensation of pain more rapidly, more intensely, & for longer periods of time than the sensation of pleasure- bummer.
I'm not sure about emotional pain, but I'd guess that many perceive its affects to last longer as well... I've never heard anyone mention enduring pleasure.
Any kind of pain functions as a warning signal; unfortunately, we tend to disregard it as such.
