"...as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Welcome to the Quote of the Day! This site originated in a small, special education, high school classroom and we talk about these quotes each morning on school days. We'll share our thoughts, feelings, and personal values as we explore the words of others. We look forward to hearing your thoughts as well. If you have a quote that you would like to see used, please send it to: michelle(dot)nvs(at)gmail(dot)com (all lower case).

Sometimes it seems hard enough to even take good care of ourselves but this quote, even though I really like it, adds the burden that we owe it not just to ourselves but also to those around us.
Why is it that the inspiring and uplifting words are the ones that make me feel the most inadequate?
I don't think it's a matter of being inadequate. It's a matter of being enticed into a myth. As women, especially, we are taught to put the needs of others first. I think what this quote tries to teach us is that sometimes, the best way to put others first is to put ourselves first.
How many times do we nag the men in our lives to eat better, exercise and get enough sleep "Because our family needs you here and healthy for the long haul"? How often do we heed our own advice?
With that said, I think yo're right -- it is an invitation to book passage on yet ANOTHER guilt trip. ;)
Even the bible (and can you believe me referencing the bible?) says "Before you can remove the splinter from your brother's eye, you much remove the log from your own".
The thing to remember is taking care of ourselves IS taking care of others, especially our families. Our children learn by what we do, not what we say. If we take care of ourselves, then they see that is how to be an adult.
