She hits exactly one of the flaws of so many of the programs in modern education in the US - the attempt to instill self-esteem in our children. This isn't something that can be given - it is achieved. You achieve it by successfully overcoming the obstacles in your life, not by having people remove them.
If everyone who is capable of doing so, took personal responsibility for him/herself - for their own functioning, survival, thriving, & so on- what a much less burdensome world we would live in.
